LAKELAND, Fla. – The Fire continued their winning ways on Saturday. Southeastern University made it two weekend shutouts with a 4-0 men's tennis victory over Florida National University.
After only giving up one game in the two doubles matches, SEU finished off Florida National when Piero Fernandez registered two scores of 6-2 over Ignacio Acosta.
SEU improved to 12-0 on the year. The Fire have now shut out three of their last four opponents and eight in 12 matches.
Beginning the afternoon, Javier Gallego and Gonzalo Fernandez made quick work of the Conquistadors' Lukas Kopitzki and Mats-Jonathan Werner in a 6-0 final.
Piero Fernandez won his first match when he teamed with Diego Menendez in the top doubles pairing with a 6-1 victory over Alejandro Suarez and Daniele Trenton.
Menendez made the quick switch to singles play where he cut through David Santamaria in straight sets scores of 6-0, 6-0.
Gonzalo Fernandez was the second to finish at fifth singles when he defeated Werner in a match of 6-2, 6-1.
Piero Fernandez saw Acosta last one game longer when the Fire's second singles took away the win, 6-2, 6-2.
At third doubles, Mark Griffin and Gustavo Rubio had SEU atop, 4-2, over Anis Kerfah/Acosta when it was called.
Gallego prevailed via the tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-4), and held an early 3-2 lead over Suarez at third singles when it was stopped.
Griffin picked up the first set (7-5), but Florida National's Kopitzki was leading, 6-3, in the second set of the fourth singles when play was halted.
Sam Reeder appeared on his way to a sixth singles win (7-5, 2-1) when his match against Gustavo Masu was paused.
The Fire will return to action on April 8, when they host Eastern Florida State College at 1 p.m.
