Fire Overtake Oglethorpe, Remain Undefeated

LAKELAND, Fla. – The Fire didn't let a week off have any effects on their return to play on Tuesday. Southeastern University posted its fourth shutout of the season and prevailed over Oglethorpe University, 7-0, in men's tennis action on Wednesday.

The fourth-ranked Fire's top doubles team of Piero Fernandez and Diego Menendez began the afternoon with a 6-2 win over the duo of Tony Moline/Figge Pernfors. Javier Gallego and Gonzalo Fernandez gave the home team the doubles point in a 6-3 victory over Nicolas Kellen/Bailey Raymond.

Menendez, who is rated No. 24, posted his own shutout in the top singles meeting with Kellen (6-0 and 6-0). No. 30 Alejandro Orihuela was up to the task as well, as he beat Pernfors.

As a team, SEU has shut out four of its six opponents this spring and are now 6-0 on the season.

Gustavo Rubio held tough in the sixth singles matchup with Molinet with a 6-2, 6-0 final. Mark Griffin sealed the SEU victory as he took the match to Bailey Raymond in the third singles contest (6-0, 6-1).

Gonzalo Fernandez and Sam Reeder completed the match sweep in the fourth and fifth singles. Fernandez beat Noah George (6-2, 6-3) and Reeder bested Zack Raymond, 6-3, 6-2.

In the third doubles match-up, Rubio and Reeder pulled out the 6-4 win over Zack Raymond and Callum Searle to seal the shut out.

The Fire return to action on Saturday when they host SCAD-Atlanta in a 1 p.m. match at Beerman Tennis Complex.
