Fire Never Trail, Sweep Night Hawks

LAKELAND, Fla. – The Fire enjoyed another successful day to stay undefeated. Southeastern University never trailed in 14 innings of work today, sweeping past Thomas University, 3-0 and 6-2.

In game one, Chapel Cunningham drew a first inning lead-off walk, stole second, and raced home on Nicole Wasserstrom's ground out for a 1-0 lead. That was all teh support that Edan Playa needed, as she fired a 6-hit complete-game shutout and fanned five in the 3-0 win.

In game two, after a scoreless first frame, Raylei McKinney doubled and scored two batters later on a Kassidy Moore double and SEU never trailed again. The Fire added two more on Moore and Maria Zelenka RBI singles in the third and Leah Gonzalez blasted a two-run homer in the fourth, putting the game away.

With the sweep, SEU improved to 4-0 on the young season, and ran their win streak against Thomas (4-2) to eight games.

Playa recording the 6-hit shutout for her second win of the weekend. Zelenka joined her at 2-0 with her second complete-game victory, allowing two earned runs and five hits while striking out two.

Gonzalez provided the offensive power, as she was 3-for-6 with a solo homer in the first game and a two-run shot in the second game with three runs and three RBI. Hailey Brooks had a double, two singles, a run, a stolen base.

Five SEU players accounted for 10 of the other 12 hits of the day, each with two – Cunningham, Wasserstrom, McKinney, Moore, and Ella Brooks. McKinney, who drove in two runners, and Moore, who had one RBI, laced doubles, while Cunningham scored twice and swiped three bases. Zelenka and Lauren Sekinger also singled.

The FIre return to action on Thursday, February 20, when they face Thomas University in Thiomasville with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.
