Another Sweep Lifts Fire Over Cougars

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Southeastern University swept two from Mount Vernon Nazarene, 9-1 in six innings and 8-1, for their fourth doubleheader sweep of the spring.

SEU (8-1) scored in each of its six innings in the first game, powered by Raylei McKinney's triple and home run. In the late game, with a 1-0 lead in the home fourth, Chapel Cunningham drove a run in on a fielder's choice and swiped home later with the third run while McKinney lofted a sac fly in between for a 4-0. Maria Zelenka set down the Cougars in the final two frames in order and completed the sweep.

Zelenka and fellow pitcher Edan Playa combined to give up only Thursday's two single runs over the last 26 innings in the circle. Zelenka scattered five hits and one earned run with six strikeouts over seven frames, while Playa allowed only three hits and one earned run herself with four strikeouts for six innings.

McKinney kept her hot bat going with a 4-for-8 afternoon with three runs, a triple, a two-run homer and five RBI. Nicole Wasserstrom lined five singles in eight trips to the plate with two runs, while Hailey Bradley belted a double and four singles with two drove in.

Kassidy Moore hit a two-run home run and a single while scoring three runs in the opener and had a single in the late contest. Mallory Watts doubled and Leah Gonzalez added three singles and a run. Both Ella Brooks and Laura Sekinger rounded out the Fire offense with two singles apiece.

SEU will have Friday off before they host Clearly University on Saturday in a 12 and 2 p.m. doubleheader.
