BABSON PARK, Fla. – The Fire completed a solid week on the hardwood Saturday evening. Joshua Blazquez pumped in a career-high 28 points and provided the key free throws down the stretch to help Southeastern University hold off Webber International University, 78-74, in Sun Conference men's basketball action today.
Blazquez recorded the game's first eight points, but it was his 18-point second half which made the difference. Tied at 38-38, the senior guard made his own 8-point run, gave SEU a six-point lead, 46-40, and his team never trailed again over the final 15 minutes. Webber International did cut the margin down to a point, 53-52, with 9:19 remaining, but SEU pushed it back to six three times, before Blazquez sealed the win with four free throws in the final 14 seconds.
On his career-point amount, Blazquez hit 8-of-18 from the field with a trio of 3-pointers and 9-of-12 from the foul line for 28 points. He narrowly missed a double-double with nine assists to go with four rebounds, four steals, and a blocked shot.
Nathan Mikkelson came off the bench for 13 points and had nine boards and both Derek Murphy and Kyonte Thomas added 10 points apiece and two triples. The two combined for nine assists, six rebounds, and three steals. Diego Platas made both of his shot attempts for five points to go with his three rebounds and two blocked shots. Dylan Labuhn chipped in four points, and Matthew Lentz dropped a 3-pointer.
Orlando Thomas guided the Warriors with 25 points and eight rebounds.
With the victory, the Fire completed a 2-0 week and improved to 11-12 (7-4 Sun Conference). SEU also extended its run within the series against Webber International (5-16/2-9 Sun Conference) to eight games in a row.
SEU returns to action Wednesday evening at The Furnace against St. Thomas University. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m..
