MARSHALL, Mo. – The Fire grappled with another top-rated field in the midwest this weekend. Anthony Federico led Southeastern University's wrestling effort with a team-high sixth-place finish at the Missouri Valley Invitational.
Federico rode a trio of bonus-point victories to the 157-pound semifinals. The Fire graduate student recorded tech fall wins of 19-4 and 20-3 with a 19-5 major decision to reach the final four. Federico had to bow out of the semifinal and finished with a team-high sixth place for the event and a 3-1 record.
A trio of other Fire wrestlers – Gentry Smith (197), Brodie Christmas (125) and Drew Jones (141) – posted back-to-back victories before each saw their runs come to an end. Smith pinned Avila's Blake Bekker in 2:10 for the start of his tournament and he followed with a 14-6 decision to move into the quarterfinals. Bradley Antesberger of Doane slipped past him via an 11-5 decision in the quarterfinals, before Smith came up short in consolation round six.
Christmas showed toughness over the two days. The first-year SEU wrestler bested his first foe via tech fall (18-2 in 3:17) and he followed with a pin of Reinhardt's William Bishop in 6:13. Baker's Saoul Prado edged Christmas, 2-1, but the Fire freshman wasn't done. Christmas battled back in the consolation rounds with a fall (2:57) and an 18-8 major decision. His run came to an end in a 14-8 decision in consolation round six and Brodie finished with a 4-2 record.
Jones started fast in the 141-pound weight class. Drew took a 16-2 major decision in his opening action before he pinned Arizona Christian's Gianluca Munoz in 3:59. Like Christmas, Jones fell in a tight 5-2 decision in his third bout. He, too, rallied for a pair of decision wins of 5-0 and 4-1 by sudden victory. Jones finished 4-2 as he dropped his consolation round six match as well.
In team scoring, No. 1 ranked Grand View claimed the title with 217.5 points, 103 better than runner-up Doane University. SEU wrapped up 17th with 54.0 points of the 30-team field.
At 285, Noah Winder started 3-1 before he bowed out in consolation round four. Winder began his action with a win by fall in 2:27 over Northwestern's Logan Ash. After he fell in the second round, Winder came back with two shutouts decisions, 1-0 and 2-0, before his second defeat.
Tyson Barnhart (174) and Austin Chung (149) both claimed two wins of their four matches. After a close 5-3 decision loss, Barnhart was impressive with back-to-back falls in 4:38 and 1:37. His tourney finished in consolation round four.
Chung pinned Marian's Zach Wilson in 4:48 for his opening victory. After an 8-5 decision loss, Chung won his third bout via a 10-7 final. Unfortunately, he had to forfeit his consolation round three match.
SEU's other wrestlers who won a match included Ty Rodriguez (165) and Ryan Bennett (157) with tech falls, while Ralph Sanchez (197) added a 6-1 decision.
SEU travels to Marietta, Ga., next Friday evening for a 6 p.m. dual match against No. 2 Life University.
