LAKE WALES, Fla. – Some nights it feels like you can't miss. Southeastern University used stellar shooting in the first-half to build a big lead and never looked back, beating Warner University, 108-95, in Sun Conference men's basketball action tonight.
Trailing 11-10 just five minutes into the night, SEU used a burst of five 3-pointers, four from Nelson Reynolds, in a 28-2 run that eventually pushed the lead to 44-21. They never looked back. The Royals would only get to within 13 points in the final 90 seconds of the game.
With the win, SEU was able to get back on track after a pair of close losses last week and improved to 8-10 on the year and 4-3 in the Sun Conference. Warner University dropped to 7-10 overall and 1-5 in the league.
The story of the night was shooting, as the Fire connected on 23-of-31 field goals, 9-of-13 from 3-point land, and 7-of-8 free throws in a hot-shooting first half. For the game, SEU 15-of-30 from downtown.
Off the bench, Reynolds was the spark, as he dropped 8-of-10 from downtown and made all three of his free throws, tallying 27 points in only 15 minutes of floor time. Kyonte Thomas also came off the bench, scoring 10 points and adding eight assists, five rebounds, and a steal.
For the starters, Ahmad Johnson scored 17 points, while handing out a pair of assists, two rebounds, and a steal. Derek Murphy added nine points on three triples, pulled in five rebounds and had three assists. Diego Platas contributed eight points and both Joshua Blazquez and Amir Brikat chipped in six points and a rebound, while Blasquez added four assists.
Both Nathan Mikkelson and Matthew Lentz totaled seven points and four boards, while Montez Leath made all three of his shot attempts for seven points. Dylan Labuhn and Joel Villanueva rounded out the scorers with a bucket apiece.
Blaize Darling had a big night of his own to lead Warner with 33 points, 13 rebounds and five assists.
SEU returns to action when they travel to play at Florida College on Saturday. Tip-off time is 3 p.m..
