AVE MARIA, FLA. – The Fire won their sixth match in a row, taking down host Ave Maria, 3-1, in Sun Conference volleyball action this afternoon.
Following opening sets of 25-19 and 17-25, SEU never trailed in the third set. Leading 16-14, the Fire posted the next four points and finished on a 9-1 run, with Angelina Vaccaro getting the final point in a 25-15 final. In the fourth set, the Gyrenes led 16-14, but it didn't last, as the Fire recorded the ensuing four points to take the set and match, 25-20.
With the win, SEU improves to 8-2 overall. The Fire also sit at 3-0 in the Sun Conference for the first time since they started 5-0 in the 2018 campaign. Southeastern defeated Ave Maria (1-11) for the fourth-straight time and second in a row on the road.
The adjusted SEU front line was led by Kennedy Jones' 14 kills and .316 hit percentage. Jones posted her first double-double of the season with 13 digs to go with three blocks and two assists and an ace. Yarelis Lopez added nine kills, nine digs and two aces, while Chapel Cunningham had eight kills and five blocks.
Having a big effect in the blocking game, Camdyn Gebhards set a season-high 10 total blocks to go with four kills and three digs. Down 15-14 in the first set, she had two blocks as part of an important six-point run and another pair in the four-point third-set spurt.
Sylvia Liszewski, who had three blocks, and Emma Reed chipped in four and three kills.
Haven Speer ran the offense with 27 assists and 10 digs for a double-double to go with two aces and a kill. Alexandra Postlethwaite finished with nine assists, three kills, two digs and an ace. Marysa Connors guided the back row with a season-high 27 digs.
The Fire stay on the road for a Tuesday night, Sept. 17, match-up. SEU travels to Temple Terrace for a 7 p.m. first serve at Florida College.
