TEMPLE TERRACE, Fla. – The Fire showed their road resilience Tuesday night. Southeastern University outlasted Florida College with the final two points of the fifth set and took away a 3-2 women's volleyball match over Florida College.
Tied at 5-5 in the fifth set, the Fire put the next three tallies on the scoreboard and never trailed in the deciding set. After a home attack error, Camdyn Gebhards teamed with Chapel Cunningham on a tandem block and Gebhards downed the third point on a kill and 8-5 lead. Leading 13-12, SEU closed the match after two Florida College miscues on a service error and then an attack error for the 15-12 final.
'It's tough to win on the road and this one was a team win," said head coach Amanda Phelps. "Girls came off the bench and contributed. I love having a five-set win on the road under our belt early in the season."
SEU recorded the final five points of the opening set for a 25-20 score. The Falcons won the second set (25-23), before the Fire scored four-straight points midway through the third set of a 25-21 tally. Florida College forced a fifth set when it took the fourth set by a 25-21 final.
With the win, SEU improves to 9-2 with its seventh win in as many matches. The Fire also won for the second match in a row against the Falcons after a 3-1 victory in Temple Terrace last fall.
For the second match in a row, Kennedy Jones recorded a double-double of 14 kills and 15 digs to go with three blocks, two assists and an ace. Yarelis Lopez joined Jones with her own double-double of 17 kills and 10 digs with a pair of blocks. Cunningham was the third part of the front line with 17 kills and six total blocks.
Marysa Connors dug a season-high 28 attacks and served an ace. Alexandra Postlethwaite set up 24 kills, dug seven attacks and had an ace, while Haven Speer handed out 22 assists and had five digs.
Gebhards chipped in five total blocks and downed three winners. Emma Reed added four kills and two blocks.
SEU returns home Saturday afternoon match when they face Keiser University. First serve will be at 2 p.m.
