Fire Close Strong, Prevail over Bleu Devils

MOBILE, Ala. – The Fire showed toughness when it counted on Saturday morning, and prevailed over Dillard University, 3-1, in women's volleyball action on the final day of the University of Mobile Tournament.

After splitting the opening two sets (25-15, 20-25), the Fire (5-2) trailed by an early 8-2 score in the third before turning the tide and eventually scoring the final three tallies capped by a Cambry Pope and Emma Reed combo block in a 25-22 final. SEU raced out to a 10-3 advantage in set number four and posted five of the final six points including a Sylvia Liszewski kill for a 25-17 score to end the match.

With the victory, SEU finishes its second weekend of the fall winners of 3 of 4 matches, all first-time victories over new opponents.

Pope continues to pace the Fire front line. The senior outside hitter pounded 19 winners at a .343 rate to go with eight digs, three assists, two aces and two blocks.

Chapel Cunningham was another offensive standout with nine kills and a .389 hitting percentage, while registering a pair of blocks and two digs. Along with the final point of the match, Liszewski totaled eight total kills, two digs and a block. Yarelis Lopez chipped in six kills and a pair of aces and blocks. Reed added four kills and four total blocks at the net.

Alexandra Postlethwaite and Haven Speer combined for 37 set assists in the four sets. Postlethwaite had 20 of them to go with five digs and two kills, while Speer tipped over four kills and lined two aces. Jenna Rogers controlled the back court with 15 digs and added six assists on the day.

The Fire will have almost two weeks off before traveling to Miami Gardens for a Friday night, September 6, road match at Florida Memorial to start Sun Conference play. First serve is set for 7 p.m..
