Fire Power Past Pair of Friday Foes

MOBILE, Ala. – Once the Fire started rolling Friday morning, they could not be stopped in their two matches today. Southeastern University powered past both Louisiana Christian and Southern University at New Orleans in 3-0 volleyball sweeps in the second day of the University of Mobile Tournament.


Tied at 6-6 early in the opening set of the morning match, Southeastern rattled off seven of the next eight points and rode that run the rest of the way over Louisiana Christian with scores of 25-20, 25-13, and 25-20.


In the second match-up of the day, against SUNO, the Fire trailed early but separated from the Knights with an 11-1 run, then added the final five points in taking the first set, 25-13. SEU continued in dominating fashion in the next two sets, winning 25-6 and 25-16, as it completed the pair of sweeps.


Against the Wildcats, the Fire took a two-set lead off hitting at a .351 clip and held its opponent to a .063 rate for the match. In the meeting against the Knights, the Fire pulled away with a 15-kill second set without an error for a .556 hitting percentage.


Kennedy Jones and Cambry Pope both recorded double-doubles in leading the SEU attack. Jones had 12 kills and dug 10 attacks with a pair of blocks, while Pope hit 11 kills with 15 digs and three aces. Adding to the offensive side, Angelina Vaccaro registered a .462 attack percentage with six kills and two block assists and Camdyn Gebhards had three kills and a trio of blocks.


In the second contest, Chapel Cunningham tied Pope for the hitting honors with nine kills apiece and both hit over .333 for the match. Off the bench, Olivia Williams recorded seven kills at a .429 rate and Kiley Roberts served up three service aces. Yarelis Lopez contributed 13 kills, five aces and seven digs and Emily Reed chipped in five kills.


Libero Marysa Connors paced the Fire defense in each match with 20 digs against both opponents. Alexandra Postlethwaite handed out 38 total assists, 13 digs and three aces. Haven Speer set up 15 kills.

The Fire improve to 4-2 on the season, and 1-0 against both opponents all-time. The team completes its three-day weekend tournament in a Saturday morning match-up against the Bleu Devils of Dillard University. Play begins at 9 a.m. EDT.
