CLEARWATER, Fla.—Five errors combined with a six-run seventh by St. Thomas led to an 8-2 loss by Southeastern in The Sun Conference Tournament championship game.
St. Thomas plated two runs in the second coming on a two-out fielding error followed by a throwing error on the same play.
Southeastern had a hit in each of the first four innings but it wasn't until the sixth when the got a leadoff single from
Chapel Cunningham and a one out single from
Leah Gonzalez. A walk to
Hailey Brooks loaded the bases and brought a pitching change, but
Kaitlyn Quillen drove a pitch into right center to bring home Cunningham. A sacrifice fly by
Nicole Wasserstrom to left field foul territory tied the game.
In the seventh, the Fire made two errors after a leadoff walk to give the Bobcats the lead back. Two more fielder's choice plays scored two more runs and a three-run home run put the game out of reach.
Cunningham and Quillen led the offense with two hits each.
The Fire will await an at-large bid to the NAIA National Tournament next week.
