LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga.—Hits were hard to come by against the reigning NAIA Pitcher of the Year in a 4-0 loss to Georgia Gwinnett in Southeastern's first game of the NAIA National Tournament Opening Round.
The Fire recorded two hits and drew a walk and a hit by pitch in a 4-0 loss to the host Grizzlies on Monday afternoon, setting up an elimination game against fourth-seeded Missouri Baptist on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.
Nicole Wasserstrom was the first baserunner for the Fire with a third inning double to left and got to third on a sacrifice bunt but a strikeout and foul out left her stranded there.
Hailey Brooks led off the fifth with a hit by pitch but a strikeout and two flyouts ended the threat.
In the fourth, the Grizzlies got an RBI bunt single to third and a second run scored on an error, then made it 3-0 on a first-and-third steal. A two-out bases-loaded walk in the fifth pushed the lead to four.
Southeastern failed to register a hit in eight opportunities with a runner on base and the lone two-out hit was by
Riley Sanders in the sixth. A walk to
Raylei McKinney gave the Fire a chance to get within a run but the 10
th strikeout of the game by Annalise Jarvis ended the inning.
Fire pitcher
Claire Sekinger allowed just one earned run on four hits over six innings of work. The senior struck out seven and walked three.
