LINCOLN, Neb.- Ten runs of offense, backed by a stellar pitching performance brought Southeastern its 49th win of the season as they defeated the Mount Mercy Mustangs 10-2, earning their way into the Lincoln Opening Round winner's bracket.
The battle for the Red Banner began with the Fire wasting no time making their name known, plating home four runs in inning number one, highlighted by an
Isaac Nunez three-run homer over the left center field wall.
Landrey Wilkerson added an RBI single up the middle.
Mount Mercy got their first run of the day in the top of the third inning, in which the Fire immediately responded the next half frame with a run of their own on a
Josh Pigozzo double to left to score
Gary Lora.
Two big home runs in the bottom of the fifth inning from
Josh Smith and
Alfonso Villalobos gave the Fire all the momentum they needed to carry on for the win, and tallied their last run of insurance for the day on a Lora solo shot, who has now tied the program record for career home runs with 47.Â
Lora stayed perfect on the day, going 5-for-5, just a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.
Ramsey David earned win number six on the season, tossing seven innings allowing just one earned run on four hits, a walk, and eight punch outs.
Cobe Reeves and
Colby Martin came out of the pen doing their jobs, shutting out the last two innings and combining for five strikeouts.
Southeastern will play the University of Science and Arts this afternoon in the winner's bracket at 2:30 p.m. CT.
