Baseball Drops First Conference Game In Doubleheader

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla.- Southeastern baseball split today's doubleheader, winning game one 9-2 and losing game two 7-2. Game one marked their 10th conference win of the year, and the Fire now hold a record of 31-5 (10-1 SUN).

Game one was all Fire from the start, starting from the second inning where they were able to tack on three runs on a wild pitch, walk and hit by pitch. The fifth inning saw four Fire runs come across, thanks to two RBI doubles from Josh Smith and Luis Gonzalez, followed by a Pablo Lanzarote RBI single. Brannon Mondragon picked up his third home run of the season, driving home the eighth run of the game.

Darien Smith earned his eighth win of the season, remaining perfect with an 8-0 record, followed by a solid relief performance from the bullpen, only allowing two earned runs.

Game two started out the opposite way, with Florida Memorial taking the momentum in the bottom of the first, plating home a run and taking their first lead of the series. The Lions held onto the 1-0 lead until the fifth inning, where the Fire tied up the game, sparked by a clutch, two-out single from Cristopher Munoz.

Florida Memorial was able to gain the lead right back in the bottom of the inning, taking advantage of three Southeastern errors, bringing the Lion lead to 4-1 through five innings. The Lions put on another three runs in the bottom of the eighth, allowing just one run in the ninth on an Edward Surinach RBI double, ultimately winning the game 7-2.

The Fire were unable to find answers to the Florida Memorial pitching in the second game of the doubleheader, grounding into four inning ending double plays, leaving five base runners stranded. Matt Delay and Cristopher Munoz also had two multi hit games each in today's doubleheader.

Southeastern will look to take the series tomorrow at noon.
