LAKELAND, Fla.—One of its best efforts at the plate helped Southeastern defeat Keiser 9-1 in six innings in the first of a three-game series that started Friday afternoon.
The Fire posted 14 hits in 28 at bats with three doubles and a home run. Additionally, the SEU hitters coaxed four walks and two hit by pitches.
Leah Gonzalez started her 3-for-4 day with an RBI single to center field in the first inning to score
Riley Sanders. A two-out bases-loaded hit by pitch to
Kaitlyn Quillen gave the Fire a 2-0 lead after an inning.
In the second, with runners at first and third,
Chapel Cunningham bolted for second and drew a throw that went into center field which allowed Sanders to score and record the 100
th run scored of her career.
Raylei McKinney then doubled to right field to score Cunningham and give the Fire a 4-0 lead.
Sanders finished 2-for-3.
Keiser scored its run in the third with a two-out RBI single up the middle after an error earlier in the inning.
Ella Brooks answered in the bottom of the inning with a double to left center to score Quillen.
Brooks was 2-for-4.
In the fourth, McKinney homered for the fourth time this season to push the lead to five. Her fifth inning single to center completed her 3-for-3 day and scored Brooks to make it 7-1.
A bases-loaded walk to
Alex Hilton in the sixth and a pinch-hit RBI single to right by
Claire Sekinger ended the game with two outs in the sixth.
Freshman
Edan Playa improved to 15-2 on the season with a complete game effort. She allowed just one unearned run on five hits with a walk and a strikeout.
The teams will complete the series with a doubleheader tomorrow at noon.
