Baseball Wins in Extras

Fire Baseball escaped an upset this afternoon as the Mount Marty Lancers (14-6) gave them everything they could handle, but a walk off bunt and throwing error ended the game in the 10th inning in a 4-3 victory for the Fire.

Mount Marty opened the scoring for the Lancers with a solo shot in the top of the second from Ryan Bachman over the center field wall. The Fire would not back down as a fielding error aided Tommy Davis across home plate in the bottom tying the game 1-1.

Southeastern struck once more in the bottom of the third as a balk from the Lancers welcomed Isaac Nunez home, giving the Fire their first lead of the game at 2-1.

The Lancers did not back down scoring twice more in the top of the fourth as a double from Bodi Wallar sent one run home and then a sacrifice hit added another run taking the lead back for Mount Marty.

In the next inning the Fire earned their first RBI of the game as Luis Gonzalez pinch hit for Chayce Bryant and sent a RBI double screaming to right center to tie the game at 3-3, and that remained the score until the bottom of the 10th.

The extras remained fairly silent until the Fire loaded the bases on a couple of hits and a walk. Landrey Wilkerson was the hero of the contest, laying a bunt down the first base line making for a difficult play for the Lancers, pinch hitter Edward Surinach beat the errant throw home and gave Southeastern their 18th win of the season.

The pitching staff again turned in a strong performance behind four different names, Robb Adams started the match striking out four, Cobe Reeves took over in the fifth turning in a stellar 3.2 innings with seven strikeouts on 53 pitches. Bryce McDonald joined the mix next and contributed three strikeouts over 1.1 innings. Reece Wissinger finished the deed, pitching the final inning backed by his defense to earn the win.

The Fire return to Ted A. Broer Stadium tomorrow to take on #7 Bellevue University at 2 p.m.
