Baseball Downs Calumet at Home

#1 Southeastern University welcomed Calumet College of St. Joseph to the Ted A. Broer Stadium this afternoon, and in quick manner, sent the Crimson Wave away with an 18-0 loss. The Fire with the win advanced to 17-2, and Calumet fell to 4-8.

The Fire used 19 batters and seven different pitchers over seven innings to get the job done. Reece Wissinger started the day on the mound, and in fifteen pitches, the All-American closer retired the side, earning two more strikeouts to his yearly total.

The bats struck hardest in the first inning, as the Fire connected with the baseball seven times, scoring seven runs. Five of the runs came with two outs in the inning. The batting order went full circle, as Mondragon and Nunez batted twice in the top of the first. Three doubles and a triple drove home most of the runs for Southeastern, the Fire also stole two bases in the top of the first.

Daniel Cerda and Landrey Wilkerson both went 2-2 with two runs, and Cerda added an RBI, whereas Wilkerson contributed three. Cerda also had a stolen base. Twelve of the nineteen batters to get a chance got on base, including Josh Pigozzo who came off of the bench for the first time all season and connected on a two-run homer on the first pitch he saw for his team-leading seventh of the season. This home run put the Fire up 14-0 in the bottom of the fourth.

The Fire pitching staff only allowed two hits over the course of the entire game, both hits came in the bottom of the 7th with two outs. A new pitcher saw the mound each inning, and the group of seven threw ten strikeouts and only walked three. Jaren Warwick struck out the side in his inning and the most efficient inning came from Olvis Genao in the fourth, as he retired the side on just nine pitches.

It was complete domination with 16 hits, and the Fire prepare for two more matches this week as Mount Marty comes to visit on Friday for a contest that begins at 11 a.m. On Saturday Southeastern hosts #7 Bellevue University for another top ten contest this season for the Fire, that game begins at 2 p.m.
