LAKELAND, Fla.--A two-run homer in the fourth inning gave the Fire softball team the spark they needed to pull away from Ave Maria in the first game of their doubleheader on Wednesday.
The Fire improved their record to 25-10 on the season finishing the first game of the afternoon with a final score of 3-0.
The contest was scoreless through three innings when a fourth inning single put
Leah Gonzalez on first base.
Raylei McKinney hit a home run to left field to put the Fire up 2-0.
A couple of singles from
Ella Brooks,
Chapel Cunningham, and Gonzalez set up a third run for the Fire, creating a strong enough lead to hold off the Gyrenes for the remainder of the matchup.
Autumn Hunter picked up her seventh win of the season with a complete game shutout. The senior allowed just three hits and one walk.
Game two got off to a fast start for the Fire, as they took a 3-1 lead before a rain delay forced the remainder of the game to be postponed. The game will be resumed tomorrow morning with the series finale starting afterwards.
