Softball Takes Two of Three with Gyrenes

LAKELAND, Fla.—Southeastern picked up the win in the conclusion of the second game of a three-game series against Ave Maria on Thursday before dropping the finale.

The Fire pulled away late for a 6-1 win in the first game and rallied but fell short in a 6-4 loss in the final game to bring their record to 26-11 and 6-3 in The Sun Conference.

Southeastern was up 3-1 in the fourth when the game was resumed today, getting an RBI single by Ella Brooks to score Hailey Brooks. An RBI fielder's choice by Lauren Sekinger in the first followed by a throwing error got the Fire their first two runs.

Another error in the sixth pushed the advantage to 4-1 and an RBI single by Chapel Cunningham that inning made it 5-1. Cunningham stole second and a throwing error allowed Ella Brooks to score for the final run.

Cunningham and Brooks had two hits each.

Edan Playa scored her team-leading 10th win of the season with a complete game effort. The freshman struck out two and allowed just one run on four hits and a walk.

Ave Maria had five extra-base hits in the second game, highlighted by a fifth-inning grand slam to come away with the win.

In the bottom of the inning, Kaitlyn Quillen responded with a grand slam of her own to cut the deficit to two. A two-out walk in the seventh to Leah Gonzalez gave the Fire brought the winning run to the plate but a ground out ended the game.

Cunningham was 3-for-3 with a walk in the series finale. Quillen and Seckinger had two hits each.

The Fire will be back in action next Friday at home against Warner.
