Softball Sweeps Florida Memorial in Miami Gardens

Claire Sekinger racked up 11 strikeouts over her sixth complete game of work and the Fire batters cashed in when it was needed as Southeastern prevailed for the third straight time in as many games over Florida Memorial with a 6-3 victory. The third straight Sun Conference win saw the Fire to a 24-10, 4-2 SUN record, the Lions dropped to 17-12, 2-4 SUN.

Four runs were scored over the first four innings for the Fire. In the first it was a Leah Gonzalez double to left field that brought home Riley Sanders putting the Fire ahead 1-0. Gonzalez turned in the best day for the Southeastern batting lineup, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Another Fire baserunner crossed home in the second thanks to a Nicole Wasserstrom single plating Hailey Brooks. Wasserstrom was 2-for-4 with the RBI, and Brooks scored twice on 1-for-4 batting with the fourth triple of the season for the Fire.

The Lions battled back, claiming the lead in the bottom of the second as a triple and a single brought home three runs for Florida Memorial, putting the Lions ahead 3-2. That was all they got as Sekinger shut down the next five innings.

A run in third and fourth put the Fire ahead 4-3, for the next two innings both teams remained scoreless with a few hits each. And in the seventh SEU ran home two extra insurance runs with Lauren Sekinger's RBI single to right field and an RBI to Hailey Brooks thanks to a fielder's choice.

Sanders scored two runs, adding one hit of her own as well as a walk and two stolen bases, Sekinger went 2-for-4 and Ella Brooks added an RBI on one hit.

The Fire return home for a three game series versus SUN Conference rival Ave Maria University with a doubleheader on Wednesday and a single game on Thursday.
