Softball Sweeps Florida Memorial

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla.—Eight unanswered runs in the first game and three runs in the seventh in the second game helped Southeastern sweep Sunday's doubleheader at Florida Memorial.

Leah Gonzalez put Southeastern on the board to start the day with an RBI double to left, but the Lions were able to tie the game on an unearned run in the second with a bases-loaded hit by pitch.

Hailey Brooks came around to score in the second after Ella Brooks singled and Chapel Cunningham drove in two with a double to left to make it 4-1 after two innings. Gonzalez made it 5-1 with an RBI single to left and a Lauren Sekinger sacrifice fly made it 6-1 after four.

Cunningham finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Gonzalez was 2-for-4 driving in a run with each hit.

Autumn Hunter improved to 6-4 with a six-inning gem, allowing just four hits with four strikeouts and two walks.

Nicole Wasserstrom doubled in a run in the sixth with her second hit of the game and Ella Brooks doubled in two more with her second hit.

Riley Sanders added two hits to the winning effort.

Runs were a little harder to find in the second game with the Fire getting just two runners to third in the first five innings. Florida Memorial scored first with a two-out RBI single to left. Raylei McKinney tied the game with an RBI single up the middle to bring home Sanders.

In the seventh, Danielle Wasserstrom put the Fire up with an RBI single and an RBI groundout from Sanders pushed the lead to two. Cunningham's single to left brought home Wasserstrom to make it a 4-1 game.

Edan Playa was able to hold the Lions scoreless in the seventh, working around a pair of singles to score her ninth win of the season. The freshman allowed just one run on eight hits with three strikeouts, going the distance.

The teams will finish the three-game Sun Conference series with a game tomorrow at noon.
