Baseball Completes Sweep of Warner

Fire baseball (27-2, 8-0 SUN) took to Ted A. Broer Stadium this afternoon for the doubleheader conclusion of the four-game series against Warner University (17-13, 0-4 SUN). It was the Fire pitching staff that claimed both victories 3-1, and 3-2.

Reece Wissinger showed out in the contests, earning a save in the second game. Wissinger commanded both of the games last innings, collecting five strikeouts over 39 pitches.

Robb Adams grabbed the win in the 3-1 victory, striking out eight over seven innings, allowing only one earned run. Cobe Reeves, the starting pitcher for the second game, threw 4.2 innings, striking out two and allowed just runs. Adams advanced to 5-0 on the season, whereas Reeves propelled his record to 4-0.

The pitching staff struck out 28 batters over both games, 12 in the first, 16 in the second. As a squad, they only issued two walks over 18 innings of baseball, backing up the teams overall 2.54 ERA on the season.

The bats stayed relatively quiet through both games, but they struck at critical times. In the first match, Gary Lora and Matt Delay had two hits each. The Fire struck first as David Castillo delivered an RBI single in the third, plating Cristopher Munoz, putting the Fire ahead 1–0. Warner responded in the fifth, and then in the next half inning Castillo singled again, and Chayce Bryant blasted a two-run homer over the left field wall.

That was all the Fire needed to outlast the Royals. Game two of the doubleheader started promisingly for Southeastern, scoring three runs in the first two innings on a passed ball, and two sacrifice hits. Again, that was all the Fire needed, even though the Royals did score two in the fifth, the Southeastern relief pitching staff dominated the last four innings.

Tyler Zylstra, Olvis Genao, Nick Gottilla, and Wissinger combined for a no-hitter over the last four innings. Gottilla turned in the most impressive inning only needing 11 pitches to retire Warner.

The Fire take this second Sun Conference series win into next week where they will start the week with a Tuesday match versus New College of Florida, first pitch is at 3 p.m.
