LAKELAND, Fla.- The Southeastern softball team fell short in their first conference game of the season, losing to the St. Thomas Bobcats 4-2, moving on to 18-9 (0-1 SUN) on the season.
Things got started early for the Bobcats, plating home three in the first inning on two hits and an error, and their fourth run of the day in the third via a solo home run.
The Fire were unable to respond for the first six innings, leaving nine runners stranded, threatening multiple times throughout the contest with runners in scoring position.
It wasn't until the bottom of the seventh where the Fire got things started, bringing up the tying and winning run to the plate multiple times. A
Kaitlyn Quillen pinch hit started the seventh off, followed by back to back singles from
Chapel Cunningham and
Raylei McKinney.
Leah Gonzalez ripped in the only two runs of the day on a single off the foot of the pitcher, extending her hit streak to 17 games.
Hits were not scarce, Southeastern able to outhit the Bobcats twelve hits to their six, unable to drive any in until the last inning. Cunningham had a perfect 4-for-4 day, along with
Riley Sanders, who also put together a perfect 3-for-3 afternoon.
Fire softball will finish off the series tomorrow with a doubleheader, starting at 1 P.M.
