The Southeastern softball team split the doubleheader today with the St. Thomas Bobcats, dropping game one 4-3 in extras and winning game two 1-0, putting the Fire at a 19-10 (1-2 SUN) record.
Things started promisingly for the Fire, putting up a run in the first inning of game one on a two-out RBI single from
Lauren Sekinger. An inning later, the Fire put together two more runs on a
Riley Sanders single, and an RBI single from
Hailey Brooks, putting Southeastern ahead 3-0 after just two innings.
The Bobcats responded in the third with one run, and kept the Fire bats quiet for the rest of the game, tying things up in the seventh inning with a two-run, two-out rally. They were then able to plate home the go-ahead run in the eighth inning, off an infield throwing error. The Fire were unable to respond, getting the go-ahead run as far as second base.
Pitching was the name of game number two, as only one run was scored between the two teams in the entire contest.
Ella Brooks bunted home
Lauren Sekinger in the bottom of the second, and the Fire were able to hold on to the 1-0 lead, thanks to a complete game shutout performance from
Claire Sekinger, her first of the season. She struck out five and allowed just three hits.
The Fire will play next this coming Monday, against the St. Ambrose Fighting Bees, before traveling to Miami Gardens on Friday for more conference action.
