Men’s Basketball Prepares for End of Season Contests

Southeastern University (14-11, 6-6 SUN) men's basketball prepares for a two-game homestay to finish the regular season as they get ready for two conference rivals.

This Wednesday the Fire welcome the Florida Memorial University Lions (20-6, 7-5 SUN) to the Furnace. Despite four scorers in double digits the first half shooting would come back to bite and the Fire fell to the Lions 72-63.

Reggie Mesidor was the leading scorer for Southeastern in that contest with 17 points, and Amir Brikat had his first double-double of the season with 13 points and ten rebounds. Mesidor has been the most effective member of the Fire offense with 16.6 points per game, Makai Vassell scores 14.4 points per game on 54 percent shooting, junior Joshua Blazquez averages 11.8 points per game, and big man Anthony Duncan now averages ten points per game on the season after two consecutive games leading the Fire in scoring.

Defensively, the Fire hold their opponents to 73 points per game. Southeastern does not force many turnovers, but they also do not allow many second chance baskets as they take down 36.6 rebounds per game. Vassell leads in rebounds with 7.2 per game, Sean Shore grabs 5.8 boards per contest, and Duncan corrals 5.4.

Florida Memorial enters this contest after losing at home to Webber International 89-81. The Lions boast a blistering offensive attack, scoring 80.1 points per game. This attack is led by a well-balanced offense, in which Latavious Mitchell leads the charge scoring 13.1 points per game, averaging a double-double as he also grabs ten rebounds per game. Even though Mitchell is the leading scorer, the Lions have seven athletes scoring seven or more points per game.

Defensively, the Lions only allow 72 points per contest, holding opponents to 40.4 percent shooting. Derrius Ward leads the team in steals with 37 as the Lions force 14 turnovers per game scoring 17 points off those rebounds. Florida Memorial also dominates on the glass outrebounding rivals by ten or more every game. Mitchell leads this category as well, with next closest being Felix Uadiale with 6.8 rebounds per game.

On Saturday the Fire will host Warner University (11-15, 3-9 SUN), earlier this season Southeastern made the trip across Polk County to face the Royals, and were successful using a 15-0 second half run and strong defense to come out with a 63-59 victory. Duncan scored 15 points and collected nine rebounds.

The Royals are helmed by Blaize Darling Jr., the guard shoots 51 percent from the floor and averages 17.1 points per game, he is followed closely by Logan West who scores 16 per contest and Christian Nurse is the last double digit scorer per game with 11.4 points.

As a whole, Warner scores 73.2 points per game and holds their opponents to 71 points, they assist 12 times per game and force 14 turnovers. Darling Jr. leads in steals with 57 on the seasons and West leads in blocks with a total of 27.

The game versus Florida Memorial on Wednesday tips off at 5:30 p.m., and the regular season cap versus Warner tips off Saturday from the Furnace at 5:00 p.m.
