Fire Take Two Out Of Three in Series Versus Trojans

Southeastern took its first loss of the season splitting a doubleheader with No. 9 Taylor on Friday. Southeastern took the first game 5-0 before dropping the second 11-9.

Robb Adams took the mound to start the first game for the Fire, managing to secure a win for himself to improve his record to 2-0 on the season behind five strikeouts over six innings of work. After completing his work, the Fire brought Bryce McDonald to the mound and after finishing the seventh and eighth innings, Cobe Reeves took the mound and finished the job.

The bats were consistent and brought the Fire six hits off of the three pitchers the Southeastern batters saw. Although it was the five errors from the Taylor Trojans that showed the Fire good fortune as the Fire only had two RBI's on the game, all the rest of the runs were scored on either a wild pitch, throwing error, or fielder's choice.

The Fire infield was the real highlight of the day, nothing got past Southeastern's front five. Adams would even get in on the action catching a bunt and throwing out a runner at first for a 1-3 double play.

Tommy Davis had two hits with two runs scored.

Game 2 of the doubleheader, and game three of the series against Taylor was a much different story. The Trojans decimated the Fire bullpen in the sixth inning, scoring five runs and scoring in every inning after the sixth to end the game handing the top-ranked Fire their first loss of the season.

The game started casually for both teams with Taylor striking first off of an RBI single from Cam Knepp who went 3-6 with two RBI's. Going up 1-0, their lead would not last long as Southeastern struck back in the bottom of the second going up 2-1 thanks to a run scored by Josh Pigozzo and an RBI from Isaac Nunez.

The Fire really opened up the scoring in the bottom of the fifth, taking advantage of an error and some great batting to score four runs going up 6-3 with an RBI sac bunt by David Castillo, an RBI double by Chris Munoz, and an RBI single up the middle by Pigozzo. That was when the Trojans batting lineup would dominate.

In the top of the sixth the Fire went through three pitchers, trying to find the answer for the blazing bats of the Trojans. Colby Martin allowed five runs on three hits, and then it was Antonio Escano's turn, and at last Jay Schueler retired the side after the Fire fell behind 8-6.

The Trojans continued to pour it on, scoring one run in each of the last three innings. Despite a last ditch effort, scoring three runs in the bottom of the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Landrey Wilkerson and a two-run homer by Nunez.

Davis added two more hits in the second contest as did Castillo.

The Fire return to action on February 20 where they will face the Division II University of Tampa at 6 p.m.
