Two 8-0 runs early in the game for the Bobcats proved a difficult hill to climb for the Fire, but an all around team effort helped Southeastern come out with a 71-60 win and move up to 12-5 (3-1 SUN).
The game opened up with Southeastern trailing by eight before sinking their first basket, when
Kiki Britzmann got things started for the Fire, scoring the first nine points for her team.
It was a back-and-forth battle after that, with the Bobcats holding the lead for almost 65% of the game. Southeastern didn't see their first lead until 3:18 left in the third quarter, after a
Rebecca Cook layup that put the Fire ahead.
That was all the momentum the team needed, as after jumping ahead of the Bobcats, the Fire held on to the lead until the end of the game. The fourth quarter made the difference for Southeastern, as the team held St. Thomas to 5-of-16 shooting and 0-7 from three. The Fire ended the game on a 13-2 run, and saw
Mya Herman sink nine of her 13 points on the day in the final 3:21 of the game.
Four players for Southeastern made a significant impact with ten or more points, including
Bekki Kalaydjiev who led the way with 15, followed by Britzmann and Herman with 13 points each, and
Courtni Demorest with 10 points, all combining to shoot 50% from the field.
The Fire play next at home on Saturday, January 20th against the Coastal Georgia Mariners.
