Monster Second Quarter Sends Women’s Basketball past Webber

LAKELAND, Fla.—Southeastern connected on 11 shots in the second quarter with nearly half being 3-pointers to help the Fire come away with a 77-63 win over Webber International to improve to 2-1 in Sun Conference play.
 
Trailing by a point after the first quarter, Southeastern went on an 11-1 run to start the second quarter to go up 26-17 with 6:39 left in the second. The Fire (11-5) went 5-of-7 from the field, led by five from Kassidy Jones who finished with 14 points going four-of-five from 3-point range. Kacilyn Krebs hit back-to-back triples to put the hosts up 32-19 with 5:14 left in the half.
 
A 14-2 run by the Fire gave them a 40-21 advantage on a Bekki Kalaydjiev layup at the 3:01 mark of the quarter. Kalaydjiev led Southeastern with 15, which included a layup just before the horn to put the Fire up 44-31 after 20 minutes.
 
The Warriors (3-11, 1-2 SUN) got within 10 at three different points during the third quarter and did so as late at the 2:24 mark at 55-45 but the Fire were able to answer with a 3-pointer by Kiki Britzmann on the next possession.
 
Britzmann finished with 13 points and had four rebounds.
 
The advantage got below single digits with 1:36 left in the quarter, but Courtni Demorest's first basket of the season started a 6-1 run to close the quarter to get back to double digits and hold it the balance of the game.
 
Southeastern finished 49% from the field and 12-of-30 (40%) from 3-point range. Rebecca Cook registered a game-high 12 rebounds.
 
The Fire will travel to Miami Gardens on Wednesday to take on first-place St. Thomas.
