Volleyball Goes 2-0 on Day Two of Faulkner Invitational

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Southeastern volleyball concluded the weekend with an impressive showing on the court Saturday, winning both their matches without dropping a set. The Fire took game one from Point University 3-0, and the second from Tennessee Wesleyan University.

In game one, Southeastern had 43 kills, led by Grace Petty and Emilia Harding who combined for half of the team's kills, both with 11. Tatyana Lyons also recorded eight kills.

Set one was led by a strong Fire defense, keeping the Skyhawks to a .020 hitting percentage. The Fire went on a 5-0 run to bring the score to 15-7, then another 4-0 run later on to close out the set 25-15 with an impressive chain of kills from Chapel Cunningham, Harding, and Lyons.

The Skyhawks battled back in the second set, but it wasn't enough for the Fire offense. Southeastern hit .303 in set two, beating Point 25-18.

With a 4-0 run to start the third set, the Fire had the momentum early. Going on a 6-0 run and leading 11-2, the Skyhawks were never able to gain their stride. A kill late in the set by Cunningham sealed the deal for the Fire, winning the set 25-15 and taking the match 3-0.

In game two, Petty led the way with 12 kills and 14 digs, helping the Fire take the match 3-0. Cambry Pope and Harding each had eight kills. Alexandra Postethwaite led the Fire with 22 assists, followed by Ava Connors with 16.

Set one came down to the wire with Southeastern pulling out the win 28-26. The Fire trailed behind in the middle of the set 20-17, but went on a 5-0 run, which included 3 kills from Petty, to give them an advantage. They were then tied at every point from 22 until 26, when Olivia Williams had a kill to bring home set one 28-26.

In set two, the Fire shut down the Bulldogs' offense, holding them to just eight kills and winning 25-13.

In the third set, the Bulldogs jumped up 3-0 early on, but Southeastern with a seven-point run, making it 7-4. After a pair of kills from Pope and a service ace from Chloe Rhodes, the Fire led 11-5. The Bulldogs responded with a 5-0 run, and then another 5-0 run quickly after to take the lead 17-16 over the Fire.

Southeastern kept their composure, answering with a 6-0 run with the help of two Lyons kills and a kill each from Petty and Harding.

Kills from Harding and Pope, along with a service ace from Petty, took the set 25-22 and the match 3-0 for the Fire.

The Fire will be back on the road Thursday, September 7th at Florida College at 7 p.m.
