LAKELAND, Fla.—Southeastern struggled to get the offense going in Monday's non-conference game against Georgia Gwinnett.
The Fire were held to just three hits and flew out 16 times in a 3-0 loss to the No. 11 Grizzlies.
Leah Gonzalez ended a streak of 62 hitters retired by GGC starting pitcher Annalise Wood with a leadoff single in the second and got to second on a wild pitch, but Wood came back with a pair of strikeouts and a flyout to foul territory to end the threat.
In the top of the third, a solo homer to right got the Grizzlies a 1-0 lead. GGC (35-9) added two more in the top of the fourth on an RBI double and an RBI single up the middle. A walk loaded the bases with one out, but SEU starting pitcher
Autumn Hunter was able to coax a flyout and a lineout to short to end the threat.
The Fire (29-13) got the leadoff man on in the bottom of the fourth when
Erica Stahl singled to center field, but three flyouts ended the inning. After the single by Stahl, Wood retired the final 12 she faced to earn her 12
th shutout of the season, even battling a nearly two-and-a-half-hour weather delay in the fifth.
Southeastern will conclude the regular season this weekend with a three-game series at Ave Maria.
