Softball Takes Game One against Gyrenes

AVE MARIA, Fla.- Southeastern softball managed to fend off Ave Maria in game one of the Sun Conference series today, taking a 5-3 win to claim their 30th of the season.

After two scoreless frames, Southeastern (30-13, 18-4 SUN) got on the board first after back-to-back errors to lead off the inning. The Wasserstrom sisters then delivered with Nicole Wasserstrom drawing a walk to load the bases and Danielle Wasserstrom sending a single into shallow left field for an RBI.

In the Fire's next trip to the plate, Chapel Cunningham singled and stole second base and moved into third off a single into right field by Lauren Sekinger. Sekinger then baited a throw down to second on the next play, allowing Cunningham to come home for a 2-0 lead.

The Fire added three more off two hits and an error in the top of the fifth for a five-run cushion.

Leah Gonzalez reached on the third Gyrene error of the day to begin the inning while a walk to Haleigh Harrell and a Wasserstrom hit-by-pitch loaded the bases. Karah Schultz then provided some insurance with a two-run single to left center. A single by Madi McDaniel loaded the bases once again, setting up an RBI walk to Cunningham for the 5-0 lead.

The Gyrenes threatened in the bottom of the sixth after back-to-back singles and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases. The Fire lead was quickly cut to two after three consecutive bases-loaded walks by the Fire pitching staff.

Kenzie Forrester came on in the bottom of the sixth and recorded the last four outs to earn her second save of the season.

Autumn Hunter moved to 12-5 on the season after going 5.2 innings and allowing three earned runs on four hits and two walks.

Schultz ended the day going 2-4 with two RBI's while Cunningham went 2-2 with two walks, a run, RBI, and stolen base.

The No. 17 ranked Fire will take on the Gyrenes for a doubleheader tomorrow at 1 & 3 p.m. to conclude the regular season.
