LAKELAND, Fla.—Southeastern slugged its way to a sweep in its first Sun Conference series of the season last weekend and will face its other Polk County rival this weekend in Lake Wales.
The Fire compiled a pair of run-rule victories on Friday, then got some bottom of the ninth heroics to take Saturday's game on a walk-off home run by
Josh Pigozzo.
Pigozzo is currently riding a 21-game hit streak after going 5-for-14 with three RBIs and two home runs against the Warriors.
Gary Lora had the top bat against Webber with nine hits in 13 at bats with a pair of home runs and five RBIs.
Nicholas Block on Friday had four home runs in his six hits to earn Sun Conference Player of the Week honors.
Darien Smith was the league's pitcher of the week after punching out 14 in his Sun Conference debut in the second game on Friday. He ranks second in the NAIA in strikeouts per nine innings at 15.53. All three of SEU's starters that threw against the Warriors rank in the top 20 nationally in strikeouts per nine with
Robb Adams eighth at 14.22 and
Danny Batcher 16
th at 13.25.
Warner comes into the series with a 17-14 overall record after dropping 2-of-3 at Keiser over the weekend. The Royals took the Friday night game by the score of 8-6 led by a 4-for-6 effort from leadoff man Chris Fergueson. He scored the go-ahead run in the eighth on Kayden Anderson's single to center.
The Royals are sixth in the NAIA in runs scored with 189 and in hits with 247. The pitching staff has an ERA of 5.31 through 230.2 innings of work this season.
Friday's doubleheader will start at 3 p.m. with Saturday's game starting at noon.
