FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.—Southeastern had 29 wrestlers compete at the Citrus Open at Cardinal Gibbons High School this week in two different divisions of the tournament.
Five placed in the top five, highlighted by
Jackson Crawford and
Ralph Sanchez finishing second in the Warrior Divisions at 141 and 197, respectively.
Crawford reached the final with a pair of major decisions and a second period fall before a 6-5 loss in the final to Cornell College's Elliot Cooney. Sanchez recorded a first period fall and a 12-5 decision to reach the championship which was won by Braydon Hoffman of Cornell College, 9-2.
Jake McConville took fourth in the Warrior 141 bracket with a 13-7 decision and a first period fall before losses in the semi and third-place match by fall.
Karter Johnson had the highest placement of those competing in the NCAA division of the tournament with a fifth-place finish. Johnson won his first two matches with a third period fall and a win in sudden victory before being pinned in the quarterfinal. He won twice in the wrestlebacks and defeated teammate
Jonathan Vanderbilt 1-0 in the placement match. Vanderbilt won his first two matches by fall, getting one in the first and one in the second period. He also picked up a pair of wins in the wrestlebacks by decision and major decision.
Konner Schluckebier was fifth in the NCAA 141 bracket, winning four matches after a loss by fall in the second round. He came back with two pins of his own and two major decisions to reach the consolation semis.
The team will next compete on Friday at the NWCA National Team Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
