CORBIN, Ky.—Two champions were among the ten Southeastern wrestlers that came home with hardware from the Patriot Open on Saturday.
Second-ranked
Gabe Jacobs was the 285-pound Open champion with three falls and a major decision. The major came in the semifinals against No. 12 Carlos Figueroa by the score of 14-3 and in the championship, pinned No. 9 Bruce Wagers in the first period.
Andreus Bond was the Open 157-pound champion with three major decisions and a technical fall in his four matches.
Parker Dobrocky was the runner-up at 149 with the championship match between sixth-ranked Dobrocky and No. 3 Jace Luchau of Cumberlands not contested. Dobrocky won a pair of technical falls to reach the quarters, then won a pair of decisions to make the final.
Tehran Piza placed third in the Open 165 bracket, winning his first match in sudden victory. After dropping the quarterfinal match in sudden victory, Piza won three matches in the consolation bracket to reach the third place bout which was not contested due to established match limits.
Chris Kelly was fourth at 149 with his only losses coming to Luchau by three in the semis and Bellarmine's Zac Cowan in the consolation semis.
Esau Bazilme was fifth at 125 in the open division, and
Liam Leckie was fifth at 174.
In the freshman/sophomore divisions, Kai Schultz and
John Roberts recorded third-place finishes. Schultz was third at 165, winning five straight matches in the consolation bracket after a loss by first period fall in his first match. Roberts was third at 184, scoring a pair of pins in the consolation semi and third-place match.
Joseph Kindred was fifth in the freshman/sophomore 141 division, winning the fifth-place match in sudden victory.
The Fire will head to St. Thomas on Thursday for their first dual of the season.
