WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – In day two of the trip to Williamsburg, the Southeastern University Fire went 1-1 with a 3-0 win over Ohio Christian University and 3-0 loss to Bluefield University to close out the Cumberlands Invite.
In game one against the Trailblazers, the Fire allowed just 18 points combined in the first two sets, taking set one 25-8 and set two 25-10.
The first set saw the Fire jump out to an early 8-3 lead after five unanswered points and would remain in control for the entirety of the set thanks to nine errors by the Trailblazers. As a whole, the Fire registered 10 kills in the first set.
Set two saw the Fire hit .357 as a team with 12 kills on 28 total attempts to take set two 25-10.
Sylvia Liszewski and
Lucy Montgomery combined for eight kills in set two with each player collecting four.
The Trailblazers took the first lead of the contest in set three after going up 9-4 behind three service aces and two Fire attack errors. The Fire battled back to tie the contest at 18 and would go on to take set three 25-19 with two service aces to end the contest.
Liszewski led the Fire with 14 kills while
Ryanne VanWyk recorded 33 assists and four service aces.
Game two against the Rams moved the Fire's record to 4-7 after dropping all three sets. Set one saw the Fire trail the entirety of the set, concluding with a 25-17 Ram's win.
The Fire bounced back in set two, taking the early 7-2 lead but three consecutive kills by the Rams tied the contest at 16. The Rams managed to tip the scales late in set two after back-to-back kills by Adriana Soto Alvarez gave them the lead and eventual 25-23 victory to go up 2-0.
VanWyk opened set three with back-to-back service aces to aid the Fire to a 5-2 early lead. The Fire lead was held until nine-consecutive unanswered Ram points gave them the 15-10 lead behind five Fire errors. SEU fought back to tie set three at 17 with a five-point run and managed to regain the 22-20 lead with an ace and another kill by Liszewski. Unable to hold the lead, the Rams would go on to take the set 25-23 and the match 25-23 with four late Fire attack errors.
Liszewski again led the Fire offense, this time with 16 kills and three blocks with VanWyk registering 34 more assists.
The Fire return home for their next contest as they take on Warner University on September 14
th at 7 p.m.
