Football Aims to Keep Momentum Going

LAKELAND, Fla.—Southeastern looks to improve to 3-0 tonight when it hosts Florida Memorial in a non-conference contest at Victory Field.

The Fire have shaken off sluggish starts in their first two games and have scored 48 second quarter points this season and have held both opponents off the scoreboard in the first 30 minutes of each game. SEU outscored North American and Savannah State 71-0 in the first half.

A balanced attack on offense has seen Southeastern average 167 rushing yards and 223 passing yards per game with five rushing touchdowns and three passing touchdowns.

Kaylan Wiggins is the reigning Sun Conference Offensive Player of the Week and has racked up 156 rushing yards on 18 carries and has completed 60% of his passes for 391 yards.

The defense has helped the Fire register a +3 so far in the giveaway-takeaway ratio with four fumble recoveries and two interceptions. Marc Viechec earned SUN Defensive Player of the Week honors after returning a fumble for a touchdown at Savannah State and posting a team-high eight tackles.

Ryan Cunningham has registered a team-high 11 stops thus far and has two pass breakups from his safety spot.

Florida Memorial sits at 1-1 after defeating Edward Waters in the season opener and dropping a game at NCAA Division I Southern on Saturday. This will be FMU's first game against an NAIA team this year.

In the Big Cat Classic against Edward Waters, Florida Memorial built a 26-0 lead at halftime but had to come away with some late stops including an interception on the final possession for a 39-34 win. Quarterback Antoine Williams threw for nearly 400 yards and three touchdowns. Markell Lee was the top receiver, hauling in seven passes for 103 yards and two touchdowns.

This marks the second time the two programs have met with both meetings at Victory Field. SEU won last year's matchup 28-7. The teams will meet October 29th in Miami Gardens for a Sun Conference game.

Kickoff is at 7 p.m. and a limited number of tickets are available at SEUFire.com/tickets.
