WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.—Southeastern overcame a seven-run deficit to win its fourth Sun Conference Tournament title with a 10-9 win over St. Thomas on Sunday.
The Bobcats scored five in the first and two in the second to hold a 7-0 advantage.
"There's always a concern when you're down seven to a team like that, but we know our guys are resilient," said coach
Adrian Dinkel. "It's a long tournament and people are beat up so you know there's always a chance to get back in it."
Southeastern got on the board on a sacrifice fly by
Jose Marcano in the second and picked up a run on an RBI single by
Thomas Broyles. In the third, the Fire got the deficit down to two on a
Sam Faith RBI single to center to bring home
Brian Fuentes, a wild pitch, and an RBI groundout by
Luis Cabrera.
Bryce Moyle locked down the Bobcats, going 6.1 innings and allowed one unearned run on one hit with five strikeouts and three walks.
"When you get out there with people on base you have to get those first guys and get your team back in the dugout," said Moyle. "You can really help the offense by getting them off the field. We have goals we want to accomplish still."
That gave his team time to find their rhythm, which it did in the seventh.
"We started to see more pitches, we were a little bit too aggressive early and made an adjustment the second and third time through," said Dinkel.
Gary Lora's towering two-run homer to left tied the game and
Stephen Cullen's two-out, two-run double gave the Fire their first lead of the day.
"We kept finding hits and I was just looking to find something up real quick and deliver a short barrel and got it done," said Cullen.
The lone run to score on Moyle's watch came in the eighth on a double to center field to cut the Fire advantage to one. SEU pushed it back to two after an intentional walk to Faith set the stage for
Isaac Nunez's RBI single up the middle.
A solo homer by Robin Fernandez got the Bobcats back within one but
Ronnie Voacolo got a pop out to second and a ground ball back to him to close the game.
Voacolo earned the save, working 1.1 innings.
Faith was named the Tournament MVP after a 4-for-4 day with three runs scored. Cullen was also named to the All-Tournament team as were Fuentes and
Drew Gillespie.
Abdel Guadalupe added a 3-for-5 effort with two runs scored. Nunez was 2-for-5 with a run scored, and Cullen was 2-for-3.
