Pitching Helps Baseball Sweep Friday Doubleheader

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla.—A solid day on the mound helped Southeastern sweep its Sun Conference doubleheader at Florida Memorial, rallying to win the first game 6-5 and winning 3-0 in the second.

Brian Fuentes got the scoring started with a sacrifice fly to bring in Thomas Broyles who led off the inning with a double in the top of the first. The Lions came back with four runs in the bottom of the inning on three hits and aided by two errors.

Broyles got the Fire within two in the second with a two-out RBI single to right to score Stephen Cullen but the Lions got a two-out RBI single to right of their own in the bottom of the inning to go up 5-2.

From that point on, starting pitcher Robb Adams allowed just four more hits over the next seven innings, retiring 11 in a row at one point for the final out of the fifth through the first out of the ninth. He picked up his NAIA-leading fifth complete game of the season with 10 strikeouts.

In the seventh, Isaac Nunez drove home Gary Lora to get within two, then in the eighth Clayton Keyes scored on a wild pitch to get within one. Abdel Guadalupe's RBI infield single tied the game one batter later.

Jose Marcano's sacrifice fly in the ninth scored Garrett Sheffield for the go-ahead run.

Broyles finished the first game 3-for-4 and Cullen was 3-for-5. Mella, Guadalupe, and Lora had two hits each.

Drew Gillespie improved to 8-0 on the season with six shutout innings which saw him strikeout 11 of the 25 he faced and walked just one. Alex Munroe went 2.1 scoreless and DJ Roberts earned his fourth save of the year getting a double play ball to the lone batter he faced on three pitches.

Lora's first inning RBI single and Fuentes' RBI double in the third was all of the scoring until an RBI double in the ninth by Nunez for an insurance run.

Fuentes had two of SEU's five hits in the second game.

The teams will complete the three-game series with a single game tomorrow beginning at 11 a.m.
