Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Keiser

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.—There was no shortage of runs during Saturday's doubleheader between No. 1 Southeastern and Keiser.

The teams combined for 44 runs over the two games with Keiser winning the first game 14-11 and Southeastern winning the second 18-1 in seven innings.

Luis Cabrera was the key to the offense in the first game for the Fire, hitting the first of his two homers in the game in the first at bat of the game to spark a four-run first. Brian Fuentes and Gary Lora had RBI singles sandwiching a Sam Faith sacrifice fly in the first.

The Seahawks scored four of their own in the first, but the Fire regained the lead in the top of the second when Adrian Mella came home on a wild pitch. An RBI groundout by Keiser in the third knotted the game at five and in the fourth, Cabrera's second homer of the game put the Fire back up a run.

A three-run home run by Cyrus Grimes gave Keiser its first lead of the game in the bottom of the sixth at 8-6, but Jose Marcano's first homer of the season, a two-run blast to left, in the next half inning tied the game at eight.

The difference in the game was a six-run seventh for Keiser and did so on six hits with an error and a hit batsman.

Southeastern got three in the eighth on an RBI double by Faith and a two-run homer by Gary Lora.

Cabrera finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBIs, two runs scored, and drew two walks. Fuentes, Lora, and Thomas Broyles had two hits each.

Keiser got on the board first in the second game with a solo home run, but the Fire quickly answered with a five-run second, scoring on an error and a Shamir Morales sacrifice fly to take the lead, then an RBI double by Broyles. Mella scored again on a wild pitch and Abdel Guadalupe brought Broyles home with an RBI single to left.

Mella made it 6-1 in the third on an RBI single, and Guadalupe's solo homer to left in the fourth put SEU up 7-1.

Marcano's second two-run homer of the day put the Fire up 9-1 in the fifth.

Southeastern then compiled a six-run inning of its own in the sixth to put the game out of reach.  The Fire plated six runs on five hits, took advantage of an error and a walk. Faith started the rally with a sacrifice fly and Mella followed suit. Stephen Cullen scored on a passed ball, then Broyles and Guadalupe had back-to-back two-out RBI hits with Broyles brining in two on a single to left-center and Guadalupe singling up the middle on a full-count pitch to make it 15-1.

Mella drove in a run with a single to right in the seventh as did Morales with an RBI fielder's choice. Broyles brought in the final run with a single through the right side.

Broyles finished the game with four hits, four RBIs and two runs scored. Guadalupe and Mella had three hits each with Mella driving in four. Isaac Nunez, Faith, and Marcano had two hits each.

Logan Walters cruised to his fourth win of the season, giving up just the one earned run in the first. Walters allowed just four hits and struck out seven. Bryce Moyle and Juan Pimentel each tossed a scoreless inning in relief.

The Fire will host Florida National on Tuesday for a non-conference doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
