LAKELAND, Fla.—Eight runs in the first three innings helped Southeastern knock off St. Thomas in the first game of a three-game Sun Conference series.
With a 1-0 lead in the second inning,
Jamie Mead hit a grand slam to center field for her second hit of the game. She picked up her fifth RBI of the game in the third to make it 8-0 after a squeeze bunt by
Madison Williams and an RBI triple by
Riley Sanders.
Mead finished 4-for-4 with three runs scored and five RBIs.
Claire Sekinger improved to 7-1 in the pitching circle, allowing just one hit in four innings of work. She struck out five of the 15 she faced, allowing just three base runners.
Kenzie Forrester picked up her second save, going the final three innings.
St. Thomas scored all three of its runs in the fifth, getting a two-out two-run single and an RBI double.
The Fire tacked on their final run as the result of an error in the bottom of the fifth.
Williams, Sanders, and
Erica Stahl all finished with two hits. Sanders had two runs scored.
The two teams will meet in a doubleheader on Saturday to wrap up the series beginning at 1 p.m.
