BRUNSWICK, Ga.- The No. 18 Southeastern University Fire women's tennis team scored a major Sun Conference victory on the road Saturday afternoon, edging the RV College of Coastal Georgia Mariners 4-3 to win their seventh-straight match.
The Fire were able to lock down the 1-0 advantage in doubles' play with a pair of 6-2 wins at lines two and three respectively.
Freshman
Irene Lopez grew the Fire lead to 2-0 with a win in straight-sets at line five, failing to drop a game in the opening set. SEU junior
Priscila Baptista made it 3-0 in favor of Southeastern another two-setter at line four.
The Mariners responded with victories in straight-sets at lines two and three to trim the SEU lead to 3-2.
However, Fire freshman sensation
Martina Picardi secured the match for Southeastern with a three-set thriller at the top line. After taking the first set 6-1, Picardi dropped the second set by the same score. The Avellino, Italy native responded with a 6-2 handling of the third set to put the Fire up on the Mariners 4-2.
SEU now sets its sights on a non-conference matchup against the No. 9 Middle Georgia State University Knights next Thursday inside the Beerman Family Tennis Complex at 1:00 p.m.
