Baseball Completes Comeback Thanks to Strong Bullpen Effort

AVE MARIA, Fla.- The No. 3 ranked Southeastern University baseball team fought from behind to take their ninth win of the season today with a 4-3 victory over the Ave Maria Gyrenes in their first road contest of the season.

The Fire got on the board first in the top of the first after Brian Fuentes drew a two-out walk and came all the way around to score on two wild pitches and an RBI single by Gary Lora. The Gyrenes answered right back with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning after a single and a double brought the first run across and followed it with another base hit RBI to take the 2-1 lead, registering four hits and two left on base in bottom of the first. The Gyrenes continued to extend their lead in the second after another double and RBI single brought the score to 3-1 as they recorded seven of their 12 hits through the first two innings.

Eston Stoll made his second appearance of the season in the third inning and held the Gyrenes hitless after retiring all six batters he faced. In the top of the fifth, the Fire cut the deficit to one after three consecutive singles by Isaac Nunez, Shamir Morales, and Abdel Guadalupe brought Nunez around to score as the Fire would complete their half of the fifth with one run, four hits, and three left on base. In the bottom of the frame, Evan Hiatt came on to replace Stoll and conceded only one hit in his inning pitched.

The Fire brought the tying run across in the sixth after Gary Lora drew a lead-off walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch to later be brought home by a Thomas Broyles single and another wild pitch. Jack Wolgast made his first appearance of the season in the sixth with the contest tied at three and struck out the first three batters he faced.

The go-ahead and eventual winning run would be scored by the Fire in the seventh after two consecutive walks, a balk, and an RBI groundout by Brian Fuentes would bring courtesy runner Garrett Sheffield home to go ahead 4-3.

Wolgast would go on to give up four hits in his three and a third scoreless innings pitched and register his first collegiate win as he was replaced in the top of the ninth by Israel Cordero who would secure the Fire victory with a groundout and a strikeout, getting the save.

Broyles was the lone Fire member to record multiple hits as he finished the day 2-4. Sam Faith rounded out his day at the plate going 1-3 with a walk and a stolen base.
