Softball Splits Road Series at Florida National

HIALEAH, Fla.- After their first road series of the 2022 season, the Southeastern University Fire softball team came home with a split against Florida National and advanced to 6-4 on the season with their 12-3 victory in game one and a 1-0 loss in game two.

In game one, Florida National took the early 2-0 lead in the first inning but a solo home run in the next half inning by Katie Atkins cut the early deficit in half. The Fire used that momentum to propel them the rest of the contest as Leah Gonzalez gave the Fire the lead in the top of the third after a two-RBI double moved the score to 3-2 in favor of the Fire. Haleigh Harrell doubled the Fire's total with one swing in the same inning after her second home run of the season brought the score to 6-3.

Two innings later, Gonzalez would grab her third RBI of the day with a single that scored Riley Sanders which was followed by two more RBIs for Atkins off a single into center field. Erica Stahl rounded out the scoring in the fifth with a sacrifice fly to center that scored Madison Williams, ending the fifth with a 10-3 Fire lead.

Jamie Mead would secure the six-inning run-rule in the sixth after a two-RBI double closed the Fire's 12-3 win.

Sanders, Stahl, Gonzalez, Mead, and Atkins all ended the contest with two hits.

Autumn Hunter moved to 3-2 on the season after going four innings and allowing three earned runs on five hits.

Game two saw a much different matchup as it was decided by the defense. Both pitchers held the opposition scoreless until the Conquistadors managed to scratch the deciding run across in the bottom of the sixth as a result of two Fire errors. The Fire were held to three hits as freshman Claire Sekinger allowed only two hits through six innings and struck out two.

The Fire will next take on Cleary University in a home double-header on Saturday at 1 and 3 p.m.
