LAKELAND, Fla.- In their third sweep of the season, the Southeastern University Fire softball team advanced to 8-4 after shutting out Cleary University by scores of 2-0 in game one and 6-0 in game two.
Good baserunning and Cougar freebies accounted for the 2-0 victory in game one as
Erica Stahl came across to score in the third inning due to a wild pitch after reaching on a single and working her way around the bases. The Fire grabbed their second and final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth after a throwing error scored
Jamie Mead after reaching on a walk.
Stahl ended game one a perfect 3-3 with two doubles and a single while
Alex Hilton ended game one 2-3. Freshman
Claire Sekinger tossed her third complete game and moved to 2-1 on the season after securing the win.
The Fire took the 6-0 victory in game two after scoring all six runs, five of which were unearned, in the bottom of the fourth off of five hits and five errors. The scoring started after
Katie Atkins singled and was pinch ran for by
Ellie Perez who would eventually come around to score off of the Cougar's first throwing error of the inning.
Haleigh Harrell would then reach base after a double and would come all the way around to score after a sacrifice bunt by
Madison Williams that resulted in another Cougar error.
Linsey Arnett collected her first RBI of the season after a single up the middle scored Williams and advanced the Fire lead to 3-0.
The fourth Fire run would come after
Madi McDaniel scored after pinch running for Arnett off of a dropped fly ball by the Cougar centerfielder.
Stahl would collect an RBI a couple batters later after laying down a sacrifice bunt that scored
Chapel Cunningham, moving the score to 5-0.
The Fire tacked on their final run of the inning and the game after Atkins lifted a sacrifice fly into right field that scored
Riley Sanders.
Autumn Hunter advanced to 4-2 on the season after securing the win.
The Fire will next hit the road as they travel to Gulf Shores, Alabama for a four game weekend with contests against the No. 16 ranked William Carey University and Blue Mountain College on Friday and Louisiana State University Alexandria and the No. 10 ranked Campbellsville University on Saturday.
