LAKELAND, Fla.—Scoring 22 of the first 26 points of the game helped Southeastern come away with its 11th Sun Conference win in as many tries.
The Fire improved to 22-1 on the season with an 81-67 win over Coastal Georgia Saturday night, largely due to the fast start.
During the first 10 minutes, Southeastern had six steals and on offense connected on 12-of-18 from the field and all four free throws to lead 28-12 after the first quarter. The Mariners (6-15, 2-9 SUN) were able to bounce back in the second quarter, going 5-of-10 from 3-point range and 6-of-12 total from the field but still trailed 50-32 at halftime.
The third quarter saw both teams struggle from the outside, going a combined 1-for-20. Grad transfer
Angela Perry scored seven of her team-high 21 points during the third, connecting on 3-of-4 at the free throw line. Perry was also responsible for both of her teams' field goal makes during the third, which the Fire were outscored 14-11, but maintained a 61-46 lead going to the third.
Tahanee Bennell finished the game on a strong note, going 2-of-2 from 3-point range in the fourth to finish with 12 points, seven assists, and three rebounds.
Leilah Vigil added 13 points and four rebounds and
Rebecca Cook added 11 points off the bench, going 7-of-9 at the free throw line.
The Fire return to play on Thursday at Warner at 5:30 p.m.
