Box Score LEWISTON, Idaho- The top-seeded Southeastern University baseball team will have to play with their backs against the wall, as the Fire fell to the fifth-seeded Georgia Gwinnett College Grizzlies 11-7 in the winner's bracket of the 2021 Avista-NAIA World Series.
After an RBI-single by
Colton Onstott drove home
Nick Bottari in the top of the first to put the Fire ahead 1-0, the Grizzlies responded in the bottom of the second to knot things up 1-1. GGC tacked on two more in the bottom of the third to grow their advantage to 3-1.
A monster GGC fourth inning put Southeastern in a difficult position, as the Grizzlies scored eight runs on eight hits to take a commanding 11-1 lead over the Fire.
Southeastern retaliated thanks largely in part to sophomore right-handed pitcher
Damien Torres who was dynamic in relief for the Fire, tossing a season-high 4.2 innings of relief, allowing just one hit, walking none, and striking out five. After conceding a single in the bottom of the fourth, Torres sat down 13-straight GGC hitters to end the game.
SEU got one back in the top of the seventh on an RBI-double to left that scored
Sam Faith and trimmed the deficit to 11-2.
The Fire mustered up five runs in the top of the eighth to make things interesting and trim the GGC lead to 11-7. Bottari belted his 23rd home run of the season in the big frame, a three-run shot to left field.
Southeastern awaits to find out its opponent and game time tomorrow in a World Series elimination game.
