Softball Splits with Sand Sharks

LAKELAND, Fla. — After a tough 1-0 loss in game one vs. the University of South Carolina Beaufort, the Fire battled back to split the doubleheader with a 2-0 victory in game two, moving their record to 6-8 in Sun Conference play.

The Sand Sharks put up the only run of the game in the top of the second inning on an RBI single up the middle. Freshman pitcher Autumn Hunter pitched all seven innings, giving up one earned run on five hits.

Sophomore Erika Stahl led the Fire in the hit column, going 2-3 at the plate. Senior Lauren Watters and Freshman Katie Atkins both had one hit a piece.

The Fire answered back in game two with a 2-0 victory against the Sand Sharks.

Senior Britt Robinson hit an RBI double to left field in the bottom of the second inning, advancing fifth-year Senior Hannah Bonner to third and scoring Senior Lauren Watters. Senior Ramsey Sullivan then laid down an RBI squeeze bunt, scoring Bonner.

Robinson finished game two going 2-3 with an RBI at the plate. Holcomb, Atkins, and Robinson each had one hit.

Sophomore Megan Froelich went 6.1 IP, allowing zero earned runs and only five hits. Freshman Hunter earned the save in the top of the 7th inning, holding the Sand Sharks scoreless. 

The Fire will be on the road for their next six games. They return to action with a doubleheader at Ave Maria University on Wednesday starting at 2 p.m.
