Softball Sweeps No. 7 Mobile

MOBILE, Ala.—A three-run seventh helped the Fire come back from a five-run deficit in Game 2 of the doubleheader to complete the sweep over No. 7 Mobile.

Southeastern scored twice in the fifth of the first game to beat the Rams 4-3 in Game 1, then took Game 2 6-5.

The Fire (10-5) led 2-0 in the third on an RBI single to right by Katie Atkins and another run coming in on an error. Mobile (5-6) tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run double.

Erica Stahl put the Fire back on top in the fifth with an RBI single to center and Britt Robinson put the lead back to two with a single to right to score Stahl.

A wild pitch brought Mobile within a run and a fielding error put the tying run at third, but a flyout ended the game.

Autumn Hunter improved to 6-2 on the year, throwing all seven innings. The freshman allowed three runs on six hits with two strikeouts and one walk.

A five-run second got Mobile off to a fast start, but the Fire answered with three in the third, getting a run on a dropped fly ball, and a two-run double to left-center by Atkins.

In the seventh, the Fire had second and third with two outs when Atkins hit a rocket between the shortstop and third baseman to score Haleigh Harrell, who was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Then, Stahl hit a towering shot to left for a double to tie the game and a muffed throw from the outfield allowed Atkins to score to give the Fire the lead.

Atkins finished the second game 2-for-3 and Stahl was 2-for-4.

Mobile threatened in the bottom of the inning with the bases loaded and two outs, but Hunter came in to get a groundout to earn her first career save.

Payton Thomas improved to 2-2 on the year, working 5.1 innings in relief of Megan Froelich. Thomas allowed one unearned run on five hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

The Fire begin play at the Gulf Coast Invitational Friday morning with No. 6 Columbia (Mo.).
