LAKELAND, Fla. – The No. 23 Southeastern University softball team struggled in the circle in today's doubleheader against Sun Conference member Keiser University, dropping both games by scores of 8-5 and 10-6.
A six-run seventh gave the Seahawks the comeback win in game one while a five-run second proved to be too much to overcome in game two.
GAME ONE:
The first of two games turned into a pitcher's duel after the score was tied at 2-2 after two innings with both Giovanna Watts of KU and
Autumn Hunter pitching well in the circle.
SEU scored their two runs in the first off of back-to-back sacrifice flies from
Erica Stahl and
Lauren Watters that scored
Sam Holcomb and
Madison Williams.
Southeastern took the lead in the fifth when Watters hit a single to right-field that scored
Madison Williams with the help of a throwing error by the Seahawks.
Two of Keiser's six runs in the seventh came off the bat of Watts who hit a two-run homer to left-center field.
The Fire's comeback bid fell short after two runs came across thanks to an RBI-double by
Erica Stahl, who came around to score on a groundout by Watters.
GAME TWO:
SEU found themselves in a quick 6-0 deficit after two innings with Keiser scoring five runs in the second inning.
The Fire were able to score four unanswered runs in the third and fourth innings with RBIs coming from Holcomb and
Kaley Sarasty.
Another two-run home run by Keiser's Watts extended the Seahawk lead to 8-4.
An RBI-double by
Katie Atkins in the seventh would be the final run the Fire scored.
Hannah Bonner was impressive in game two, going 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.
The Fire (22-13, 4-6 TSC) have a week to prepare for Coastal Georgia who comes to Lakeland for a doubleheader next Wednesday starting at 2:00 pm.
